Welcome to 2018!

2018 is going to be a terrific year for our clients and their wonderful pets!

Our emphasis is on wellness, namely in-home physical examinations, vaccinations, deworming, and nutrition and behaviour counseling. But we also perform chronic illness diagnosis and treatment, spay/neuter surgery, some dentistry and have wonderful volunteers who can help with some grooming!

Here is Rosy getting a treat after she had her wellness exam. She didn’t need vaccines this year but she is going to need a dental soon!

Thanks to our terrific volunteer vets, industry sponsors, NAIT Animal Health, the Edmonton Community Foundation, and Petsmart Charities Canada for supporting the human-animal bond between disadvantaged people and their pets!

WOW! Are we busy!

Terri is now working/volunteering full time Monday – Friday.  Here she is with our helpful clinic cat, Scout:

We receive over 50 phone calls, messages, Facebook messages, and emails A DAY!  Most can be handled quickly, such as putting you on the spay and neuter list or the home visit list.  Others require some discussion and several calls back and forth.  Please be patient; we are doing our absolute best to help you and your pet.  And please leave a message.  If Terri doesn’t answer, she is speaking with another wonderful client.  She will get to your message as soon as she can.

If we don’t have a volunteer to answer the phone on weekends or holidays, we put an extended absence greeting on.  If you have an urgent need, you may try to contact us through email (Contact Us) or Facebook.  Please note that we often cannot help with urgent or emergency cases at these times and the phone message provides an alternative location where you might be able to get help.


Inner City Pet Food Bank

started by an outstanding undergraduate student from the University of Alberta, the Inner City Pet Food Bank has grown over the past year to distributing over

  • 200 cans of cat food (Friskies preferred!)
  • 100 kg of dry cat food
  • 200 kg of cat litter
  • 150 kg of dry and canned dog food
  • many treats and toys and supplies

A WEEK!!!!

Recently the location at Boyle Street Community Services was flooded so pet food is given out for the next few months at

Bissell Centre, 10527 – 96 Street.

The Inner City Pet Food Bank is open Mondays and Fridays 9:30 – 11:30.  Food and supplies drop off can be made every weekday 9:00 – 4:00.

Part-time Community coordinator!

Job Description

Alberta Helping Animals Society (AHAS) supports the human-animal bond between vulnerable people in and around Edmonton and their companion animals.  AHAS also fundraises to support AHAS Home Veterinary Services, providing veterinary care to our clients.  Reporting to the Vice President of Alberta Helping Animals Society, the Community Coordinator will be the first point of contact for AHAS and AHAS Home Veterinary Services clients and the wider community.  This is a part-time (20 hours a week) part-time position.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Respond to requests that come through phone, text, email, and social media
  • Direct requests to appropriate resources as necessary
  • Verify client eligibility for AHAS Home Veterinary Services
  • Schedule AHAS Home Veterinary Services appointments
  • Complete client information records
  • Complete client and animal information on medical records
  • Enter client and animal information into computer database
  • Coordinate volunteers
  • Schedule food pick-up and delivery to the Inner City Pet Food Bank
  • Perform administrative tasks related to AHAS
  • Assist the Board in event planning, fundraising, and community out-reach events



  • Minimum of a high school diploma (Animal health technology diploma or relevant university degree preferred)
  • Experience in non-profit and/or veterinary field preferred
  • Excellent client communication skills
  • Sensitivity to the particular circumstances of vulnerable people
  • Ability to work collaborative with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong attention to detail organization, and record-keeping skills
  • Self-confidence and a positive attitude towards work
