Inner City Pet Food Bank.  Bissell Centre West (North West Entrance) 10527 – 96 Street. Wednesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

AHAS Temporary Pet Food.  At the AHAS building 12701 – 119 Street. Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Edmonton’s Food Bank.  They sometimes have pet food and litter. https://www.edmontonsfoodbank.com/

Facebook groups.  There are a range of Facebook groups with people offering and requesting help with pet food.  Search “pet food bank” on Facebook.

Found an animal?

It is getting cold outside and many of our warm-hearted clients and friends are inviting animals into their homes.  That dog or cat may actually be lost, not homeless.  Before keeping the animal and calling us:

If you have found an animal in Edmonton, please take it to Animal Care and Control as it may belong to someone else.

If you have found an animal outside of Edmonton, please take it to the Edmonton Humane Society as it may belong to someone else.

 

AHAS Animal Care University

There is so much information on the Internet.  Lots of it is great and important information.  Lots of it is so very incorrect.  We have begun developing small courses (15 minutes each) on different aspects of animal care.

The great students in the Companion and Performance Animal Health Sciences program at the University of Alberta are helping us develop science-based content.  We originally wanted to have in person classes at our wonderful clinic but the pandemic has limited that.  So, we are going online!

Summer update!

Wow, it has been much too long without a post! Here is an update:
 
We are busy almost every single day of the week! To protect your health and that of our wonderful volunteer professionals, we have been advised to suspend house calls, except in extreme circumstances. So we are seeing patients in our lovely clinic by appointment. Ultimately, almost everyone has managed to find a ride to the clinic and we are grateful for your efforts on behalf of your pet.
 
We are slowly starting up spays and neuters, dentals, and wellness appointments. For the last three and a half months, we have only seen mostly medical cases so we have a LOT of catching up to do! Please continue to be patient.
 
Clients are still not allowed in the building, except for certain reasons. But we talk outside and on the phone and are providing outstanding care for your pet.
 
Please call us at 587-338-8668 and leave a detailed message and Jackie will get back to you. Thank you so very much to Pat Lloyd who gave us a wonderful phone. Ours was dying very sadly and Pat was so kind to give us his gently used phone.

AHAS Home Vet Services: The new “normal”

To keep everyone safe, we are severely limiting home visits to where we can see an animal outside.  We are sad because we learn so much in the home and really enjoy visiting with our wonderful clients.

Fortunately, we have our wonderful building where we are seeing patients by appointment.  At this time, our wonderful volunteer veterinarians and nurses are seeing patients with urgent issues but we have started doing some spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats for medical and behavioural reasons as well.  We are also holding puppy and kitten exams. 

We will see just your pet in the clinic using personal protective equipment.

Fix-A-Feline 2020!

Thank you, City of Edmonton Animal Care and Control, for helping us jump-start the second annual Fix-a-Feline Campaign!

Edmonton and area vet clinics are offering lower cost spays/neuters of cats the end of March.  Included is a miscrochip!  This microchip goes a long way toward getting a wandering cat back home!

Days 1 and 2 of 7 are done and we have fixed 37 cats!  Weee!  Some were pregnant.  These little siblings were getting busy in the kennels waiting for their spay and neuter!  What better way to demonstrate the importance of this campaign!

Petsmart not only is a TERRIFIC, high quality pet store but it runs an incredible charities program.  Petsmart Charities Canada has supported AHAS throughout our 4 years and we just recently received a new grant:  It Takes a Community: Supporting the Pets of Disadvantaged People in Edmonton.

This grant will help us with our spay and neuter program.  We are so excited!  And our veterinary industry partners are also helping out!  We are all concerned about animal overpopulation so we are excited to partner with Petsmart Charities Canada to help control animal overpopulation in 2020!
